Action for the environment

Although, it may sometimes seem as we cannot always do things to help our planet, there are always small ways that we can help out and promote change.

See some ways that scientists and researchers, through innovations, are taking action for the environment. Check out the button below.

try to lessen the use of transportation vehicles

Transportation is something we rely on almost every day. You may think vehicles don't make that much of an impact on global warming but every less vehicle on the road can create an overall positive impact. This is something you might not be able to do everyday but whenever you can, always try to carpool, bike, or walk to places that are not too far away. This itself is doing a lot to prevent global warming.

Avoid using fossil fuels

Fossil fuels are one of the biggest factors that contribute to global warming. Most of them such as coal take years to form but we still use them as if they are being formed daily. If you do use fossil fuels, whether that be home, work, or any other places, consider replacing them with renewable energy sources. An example includes switching to solar panels for electricity inside your house. Although, renewable energy sources can be expensive, in the long run they are a better investment not only for yourselves, but also your environment.

Pass the knowledge on

Many people believe that global warming is an insignificant process, but it is an event that continues to impact our environment in several ways. There are many people in the world who do not know or do not realize the significance of this issue. By merely addressing this problem to people, who knows, even they might get involved in the issue for preventing global warming and climate change.

do goals help the environment?

Picture

set environmental goals

Goals are good for things when it comes to time management, getting things done, etc. Why can't you do the same for the environment? After all, if you don't set goals it is much harder to get things done. Try it out, it will definitely help make a difference. Not only have goals but also strategies (plans to achieve the goals).

Not all goals may be achieved

When it comes to goals always strive for the best. If you cannot meet your goals adjust them so you can.
how do you set effective goals?

Effective climate communication

77 percent of registered voters believe that climate change is correlated to human activities and natural causes. They are also not sure whether we can do anything to address the issue of climate change. The majority feel a collective sense of apathy relating to climate-change. While coverage by the press, media, and even some environmental organizations show the daunting facts, this can often be a barrier to effective climate communication. Though this website serves as an information hub for environmental issues and taking action, your individual initiatives help make the difference. Remember, collective action is more effective than individual action. Below are some examples on how to have effective climate communication and resources for further reading. Your climate communication cannot be perfected overnight but with interaction, activism, and the feedback from your peers, this skill can be mastered. Climate communication is not about you, it is about how effective your message was conveyed.

Key recommendations

ecoAmerica® has made numerous recommendations for talking about climate change. Check it out on Page 8 of Let's Talk Climate: Messages to Motivate Americans.

Let's talk climate guide

Above is a chart from ecoAmerica® on effective word choice when talking about climate change. As can be seen from the guide, specific and more relatable word choice can often have a deeper impact and thus have a greater effect on mobilizing others.

Fight
Deforestation: Plant
trees

Planting trees is the most simple way to help prevent deforestation. From the Arbor Day Foundation ®, by becoming a member you can obtain 10 free baby trees, or you can have them plant it elsewhere where trees are needed. As long as trees are in the environment proper to them and they are given time, they will most likely grow.

If you think that planting trees may be too much work, you can still bring about change by teaching others and making them aware about the importance of trees.

On the right side, is a picture of me watering the trees I received from the Arbor Day Foundation® from the Spring of 2020 (check the About Sheel page for more pictures). Because they are situated in a stable and suitable environment they are thriving.

Still, even more important than planting trees are conserving forests both young and old. This is because forests store extremely high amounts of carbon which is vital for fight against global warming. For example destroying a 600 acre forest and then replacing that with a pine forest will not balance the effect. With the destruction of the 600 acre forest there is also the loss of much essential flora, fauna, and life.

prevent the depletion of ozone; Help protect earth

Avoid completely or lessen the use of products that include CFCs and halons. These compounds are the causes of ozone depletion.

How to be ECO-Friendly:

Compost and Discourage single

use items

This is as simple as making sure the products you use are decomposable and eco-friendly. Reducing, reusing, and recycling is also a very simple system that can be used to utilize not only plastic, but also other items such as cardboard, glass, metal, etc., resourcefully. You can help contribute even more by composting.

Reduce

When reducing the amount of unnecesary manufactured materials such as plastic and  styrofoam, it is the best of the 3R's helping our Earth and saving space in our landfills.
Picture

Reuse

Reusing items is also very good way to prevent buying any extra unnecessary items. Many items that we think can only be used once can actually be used multiple times before they have to
be discarded.
Picture

recycle

Many people believe that recycling is the best step, but it should be our final option after the other two steps. Recycling items can be done at any recycling center, or maybe you even have it get picked up at your house. Still, be careful because not all recycling centers recycle the numbers 1-7.

Make GREEN Stock Choices

Almost every choice you make can be green. Using sustainability as a factor in choosing your stocks can be a major bonus. See if companies make a pledge to be eco-friendly or reduce their emissions. The urgency of climate change is growing every single day. Companies acknowledge this - a lack of pledge to sustainability could be a potential sign of a dying or obsolete company. make our ecosystem healthier: increase

biodiversity

Biodiversity, is one of the most essential factors of an ecosystem.  Biodiversity is impacted goes hand-in-hand with issues such as climate change and deforestation. When these issues are impacted so is biodiversity.
Below are two ways in which you can help make a difference on this issue.
Picture

RESEARCH YOUR AREA'S BIODIVERSITY

Researching your habitat is one of the best ways to get to know your environment and ecosystem. Research the impacts of biodiversity and learn about the issues in your area. This issue varies in different areas based on their environmental factors.
Picture

GET INVOLVED WITH AN ORGANIZATION ON THE ISSUE

Getting involved with an organization can sometimes be the best choice as the organization usually already knows the global or local problems being faced. Local organizations would be better if you want to focus on the biodiversity issues in your specific area.

Vote for the proper

politicians

Politics has a major role for the well-being of the environment. When voting for political officials do not just think about yourself; think about which candidate is better for the environment too. There will not always be candidates who care for the environment and planet Earth. Still, use your judgement to the best of your abilities.

Wait, there's more! Even if you vote for the proper politicians, there is no guarantee that they will always listen to you. Contacting local officials, engaging in lobbying, and hosting events are all great ways to get to know your officials and help them shape your needs into their agenda. Believe it or not, large-scale environmental policy-making happens with your officials. Whether it be at the state, national, or even international level, their decisions can have large impacts.
